Mazatlan 2007

Saturday, January 27, 2007 (Ron)
No sleep Friday night. Left for the airport at 4am. Pretty easy commute in at 4am on a Saturday morning. We flew from Portland to Seattle, had a brief stop, then headed to Mexico.
The plane touched down in Mazatlan about 3:30pm. Long line thru immigration, then got our bags, breezed thru customs and went to get a taxi. Had to work our way thru the obligatory time-share gauntlet. Ended up with a free taxi ride to our resort ($28 US), free taxi ride back to the airport (another $28) and $200US cash. ‘Course we had to attend a brief time-share presentation.
We checked into Playa Maria around 5:30pm. No problemo. Got a nice condo on the second floor with a ‘garden’ view. It’s a very nice place, lots of room; large bedroom with a small balcony, big bathroom, kitchen, separate dining room, and living room with a large deck. Very nice, but not much storage space. There are two closets with a total of three hangers. Who cares, we are here, just a few steps away from the beach – it’s two weeks in Paradise.
The weather report says cloudy today, but it’s been clear and sunny since we landed and unpacking can wait. Pat and I walked out to the beach to watch the sunset. The tide is in as the sun goes down. It’s very peaceful and we start to relax. The setting sun seems to pull the stress out of us as it sinks into the ocean.
We went back to the room and got showered. Feeling great. We take a pulmonia to the Zona Dorada and get out near Pueblo Bonito. We know there is an ATM there and we need some pesos.
Now that we have some cash, we start looking for a place to eat. We walked for a minute or two and see a place that was new to us called ‘The Purple Onion’. That doesn’t sound very Mexican, but it looks good and has live music so we decide to try it out. The place is packed, so that’s a good sign. We got the only empty table and it’s outside so we can enjoy the great weather and can watch everyone as they walk by.
Pat and I each ordered a Margarita and the waiter was back in just a few minutes with our drinks. Cool. We sit and talk as we sip our drinks. There is a guy singing inside. A gringo. Something Brenster, forgot his first name but his last name is Brenster. He’s pretty good. The guy is singing country songs and has a good voice. So we’re relaxing in Mazatlan, having a Margarita, listening to some good music – life is great!
They are pretty big drinks, at least 16 ounces, but eventually they are both gone and we still haven’t ordered. Life is still great, just not as great. We are looking around for our waiter and pretty soon I see another waiter tell our waiter to come check on us. Pat ordered Chili Rellenos and I ordered another Margarita and a Chimichanga.
After a short wait we got our order. Pat really liked the Chili Rellenos and the Chimichanga was very good as well. Very enjoyable evening.
We walked for a while, then caught a bus back to the resort. It has been a very long day so we go to bed and fall asleep with the sound of the ocean just outside.
